ARE MOST GAY PORN VIEWERS BOTTOMS?
I was going through interview footage for the documentary on Falcon Studio’s Chuck Holmes, and came across an odd claim from porn star Tom Chase. “Most porn consumers are bottoms,” he said Chuck told him, “so we focus on the tops.”
It echoes what another producer once told me — that consumer base of bottoms is one reason why there’s such a robust market for gay-for-pay stars. And consider this conversation I recently had over brunch. The guy — a self-proclaimed top — claimed he never really watched porn. So — not to get to personal — but are they right? Are most porn consumers bottoms? Is this common sense, or a myth. You’re a pretty targeted audience, so I thought I’d ask:

Personally I haven’t noticed porn having an emphasis on tops or bottoms specifically. It seems as if the covers of DVD’s, the most popular stars, and the men who can be found doing guest appearances are of either posistion. One thing I have noticed as far as the industry overall is the most popular stars consistently seem to be the versitle guys. This makes sense because then gay men of all sexual preferences can be fans.

In practice, I’m versatile, but really, that’s out of necessity. If I’ve got the choice I prefer to get fucked. But I’m not sure it’s always exactly correlated to what I watch. I think I’d be more likely to fuck a Bel Ami guy (sometimes its a chemistry/age issue), but would definitely want to get fucked by a bigger hairier top. Or Diesel Washington. Maybe it’s a size thing?

I can see why they would state that gay porn is geared towards bottoms. Heterosexual porn is geared towards the straight man, which means the women getting fucked are the focus and make so much more than the men. In gay porn, the men get paid more, but gay-for-pay means they have a beautiful top man who is paid to fuck a guy. Having said that, usually both the top and bottom are very good looking, so it’s a toss-up. I think the key factor is what kind of porn you watch as opposed to gay porn in general. As someone who is more bottom, I watch more videos where bottoms get gang-banged or power-fucked because that is my fantasy. A top may be more inclined to watch a video where it is 1:1 and the top is in more control. I am hypothesizing.

The main trouble (for me) of main stream gay porn is the almost total emphasis on cock. People who are into ass are usually shortchanged. For instance: it is rare for most gay porn directors to even show an actual asshole. If they do it is for about 1 second before they whip the camera away. It’s as if most directors are squeamish about anal sex – which I find extremely odd and frustrating.

I think top and bottom goes beyond just anal. There are plenty of people who are bottoms for oral, and I’d argue that it’s less about the act than the attitude.

I am a top and I love porn. I watch it for the bottoms. Nothing better then seeing a hungry bottom begging for it. Honestly, I wish we didn’t use the labels “top” and “bottom”. I had thought younger gay men were trending away from that, but now I’m not so sure. (Probably naïve of me) The hottest porn for me has performers who are very masculine AND versatile. In my fantasy, they’re not thinking about who will “top” or “bottom” but loosing themselves in the act. If it’s only oral, that’s ok, but for me it does need to have giving and receiving. As someone who is primarily oral in his sex life, I have rarely encountered anyone defining himself as either “top” or “bottom”. When I have, it’s been a turn off for me.
